The short version
Splat Lab has no account, and we run no server for the app. Your captures, splats and exports stay on your iPhone, unless you choose to train on your own Mac or on your own Kaggle account. We receive only anonymous usage statistics (through PostHog), which you can switch off, and never your captures, images or 3D scenes. There are no ads, no tracking across apps, and we never sell data.
Who is responsible
Splat Lab is published by Tahar Amin, an independent developer (individual) based in France. For anything about this policy or your data, write to amin2020e@gmail.com.
What stays on your iPhone
The video frames you capture, the camera positions recorded with them, the trained splats and every export (SPZ, PLY, OBJ) are stored only in the app's Documents folder on your device, which you can see in the Files app. We cannot see this data and cannot recover it.
Your settings, the names of the computers you paired and their pairing keys are also stored on the device. Like other app data, all of this can be included in your iPhone backups (iCloud or computer), according to your own backup settings with Apple.
Camera and local network
Splat Lab uses the camera only to film the scene you want to reconstruct, with Apple's ARKit tracking the camera's position. Nothing is filmed in the background and the images are not sent to us.
Splat Lab uses the local network only to find and talk to your own Splat Lab Station (the companion app on your Mac) on your Wi-Fi, after you pair it with a 6-digit code. When you train on your Mac, the capture travels over your local network from your iPhone to your Mac and the result comes back the same way; it does not go through the internet or through us. You can forget a paired computer in the app's Settings.
Training on Kaggle (only if you turn it on)
Training on Kaggle is optional. If you choose it, you paste your own Kaggle API token. It is kept in your iPhone's Keychain, used only to talk to Kaggle, and never sent to us. You can delete it at any time: Settings in Splat Lab, then Forget next to your Kaggle account (and you can revoke the token on kaggle.com).
When you train a scene on Kaggle, Splat Lab sends the capture directly from your iPhone to Kaggle (api.kaggle.com), under your own Kaggle account: it is uploaded as a private dataset, trained by a private notebook in your account, and the finished splat is downloaded back to your iPhone. Splat Lab then deletes that dataset and notebook from your account. Nothing passes through us.
On Kaggle, your data is handled by Kaggle (a Google company) under Kaggle's own terms (https://www.kaggle.com/terms) and privacy policy (https://www.kaggle.com/privacy), which you accepted when you created your Kaggle account. Kaggle's quotas and rules apply to your account.
Anonymous usage statistics (you can switch them off)
To understand which parts of the app are used and to fix problems, Splat Lab sends anonymous usage events to PostHog, our analytics provider. For example: the app was opened, a capture was started, a training started or finished (with where it ran: iPhone, Mac or Kaggle), a scene was played, an export was made (with its format), a tip was bought.
Events can carry technical details added by the analytics library: a random identifier created on your device (not linked to your name, email or Apple ID), the app version, device model, iOS version and language.
Events never contain your captures, images, video frames, splats, 3D models or exports, the names of your scenes or computers, your Kaggle token or username, or your name, email or contacts. As with any internet request, PostHog receives the IP address an event is sent from; the app turns off PostHog's location lookup, and we never use the address to identify or locate you. PostHog's privacy policy: https://posthog.com/privacy.
We rely on our legitimate interest in improving the app. You can switch statistics off at any time in the app's Settings. When it is off, no event is sent.
Tips and monthly support
Splat Lab is free and every feature is included. You can leave an optional tip (a consumable in-app purchase that unlocks nothing) or support the app every month (an auto-renewing subscription, "Un café par mois", that only adds cosmetic extras: supporter app icons and a badge). Payments are processed by Apple under Apple's terms and privacy policy; we never see your payment details, only Apple's sales reports. A purchase is not linked to your captures.
Notifications
If you allow them, Splat Lab shows local notifications created on the device, for example when a Kaggle training is ready. No push token is sent to us or to anyone else. You can switch them off in iOS Settings.
When you contact us or share
Writing to us opens your own mail app: we receive only what you choose to send, and keep it to answer you. When you export a scene, the share sheet sends the file where you decide; that destination's own privacy policy applies there.
What you film
Your captures may show people, personal belongings or private places. They stay under your control. Please film only places you are allowed to film, and ask people before you capture them or share a scene in which they appear.
No ads, no tracking, no sale
Splat Lab contains no advertising, does not use the advertising identifier, does not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not sell or rent any data.
Children
Splat Lab is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Keeping and deleting data
To delete your scenes, delete them in the app (Settings also has "Delete all scenes") or delete the app from your iPhone: its files and settings go with it (and from later backups). Remove your Kaggle token in Settings, and forget paired computers there too.
Usage statistics are kept only as long as they help us improve the app. If you are in the EU/EEA or the UK you have rights under the GDPR (access, deletion, objection): write to amin2020e@gmail.com and we will answer within one month. You can also complain to your data protection authority (in France, the CNIL).
Changes
If this policy changes, we update the date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
